2025 Major Achievements

Our Voice in the Public Domain:

  • Numerous interviews with journalists, including Time Magazine, National Public Radio (NPR) and Climate One, and many local news outlets, radio, podcast, and TV interviews and international news outlets

    • State-based organizations CPA was requested to speak with: California, Illinois, Texas, Wisconsin, DC, New Mexico, New York, Nevada, New Jersey, Maine

    • International organizations CPA was requested to speak with: Canada, the EUA, and UK

Professional and General Education: 

  • Launch of Climate Junction, a unique collection of information and thinking about climate and mental health. It is the new “home” for Ecopsychepedia, along with Climate and Your Mind, an open-access e-book with personal narratives from respected authors, and Gen Climate Speaks, a new youth-led podcast series. This collection is a trustworthy source of information for a wide range of audiences.

  • Presentations to numerous professional groups, academic institutions, webinars, courses.  Estimated reach: ten thousand

  • Developed climate and mental health resources in collaboration with the National Academy of Medicine and Imperial College of London

  • Presentations to public and lay audiences. Estimated reach: one thousand

  • Teaching in courses for health professionals and psychiatric trainees at all levels.

  • Columns in trade journals: Psychiatric Times, Psychiatry News, Psychodynamic Psychiatry

  • Active leaders have developed peer-reviewed articles and book chapters including:

    • Handbook of Climate Psychiatry and Psychotherapy A Manual for Clinicians by CPA Steering Committee member Elizabeth Haase, M.D.

Policy Change:

  • Provided expert testimony to the EPA’s Endangerment Finding comment period including:

    • An extensive research paper submitted on behalf of the organization

    • Collaborated with other national organizations (ALA, MSCCH and the Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine) to contribute mental health perspectives for this finding

    • Oral testimony by over five CPA members

    • Published ways to submit comments over a three-month period to CPA members

  • Educate and advocate for State government to include assessment of climate mental health vulnerabilities, needs and development of readiness and response in their state climate.

  • Continued to provide testimony to various governmental agencies including Environmental Protection Agency on mental health impacts of air pollution and other climate change impacts

  • Endorsed the bi-partisan Community Mental Wellness and Resilience Act of 2025 (CMWRA) introduced by Reps. Paul Tonko (D-NY), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Don Bacon (R-NE), Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA)

    • Farewell to Foam Act of 2025 introduced by Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX)

    • Children and Extreme Weather Resolution introduced by Rep. Jennifer McClellan (D-VA)

  • Submission of testimony on important policy issues & signed onto over 25 letters (the most CPA has ever submitted in one year) to government officials, public policy makers, and other stakeholders on climate health/mental health issues.

Patient Care:

  • Expanded national directory of Climate Aware Therapists in collaboration with Climate Psychology Alliance - North America.

  • Provided trainings for Climate Aware Therapists in collaboration with Climate Psychology Alliance-North America.

  • Curriculum development and execution for a multi-session course on disaster mental health in collaboration with Climate Psychology Alliance-North America.

American Psychiatric Association & Other Professional Organizations:

  • Membership on the APA Committee on Climate Change and Mental Health as well as leadership on the Climate Change and Mental Health Caucus.

  • Presented at APA meetings.

  • Provides content on climate and mental health to the Policy and Advocacy Panel at the American Academy of Community Psychiatrists

 Early Career Network:

  • 40+ active Early Career Network members, contributing time, talent, and energy to CPA Working Group efforts and other projects

  • Stimulating variety of monthly meetings with presentations/discussions open to all interested clinicians

  • Training ECN members to present and lead discussions about climate mental health in our Speakers’ Bureau

    • Including November 2025 presentation at the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry (ACLP) Symposium titled, "Addressing New Threats: The Neuropsychiatric Harms of Climate Change and What We Can Do About it" by Rida Khan and Emily Schutzenhofer

  • Host a Speakers’ Circle meeting every 3 months for CPA members to debrief the latest public speaking engagements and hone our climate communication skills 

  • CPA mentorship / peer mentorship survey and match was launched in 2024. ECN continues to bring junior members in and connect them with CPA members for collaborations like Ecopsychepedia entries and mentorship.

  • Production of a ECN-specific newsletter to share climate psychiatry-related events and opportunities

Social Media:

  • Continuation of Climate Psychiatry Alliance Youtube Account with over 15 video resources available and growing

  • Expanded CPA reach by connecting with members on BlueSky

  • Collaboration with American Psychiatric Association on Instagram short form videos on climate and mental health education, attracting more than 22,000 views over the year. See a sample short form video here

  • Collaboration with the Collaborative for Health and the Environment on visual education materials on climate and mental health with over 4,000 views. See a sample here.

Alliances:

  • Developed and continued growth to our alliance/partner program

  • Strengthened our continued collaboration with Climate Psychology Alliance, North America and Climate Psychology Alliance, UK on major projects

  • Leadership and significant input on mental health impacts to Medical Society Consortium on Climate and Health

  • Expanded work with the Collaborative for Health and the Environment on climate mental health materials available to their audiences

  • Participation in American Lung Association. Healthy Partners

  • Expand international alliances: Membership of Global Climate & Health Alliance (Cradle to Grave Report)

Membership & Community Engagement: 

  • Over 120 NEW members joined Climate Psychiatry Alliance in 2025

  • Hosted quarterly engagement events including:

    • Author discussions featuring Jake Bittle, author of The Great Displacement, and Alan Weisman, author of Hope Dies Last

    • A presentation by Dr. Elizabeth Ryznar on the mental health impacts of microplastics

    • A forum on the spiritual aspects of climate change led by Dr. Emily Walz, Dr. Janet Lewis, and Rev. Nicole Diroff of the BTS Center in Maine

  • Over 130 members attended these community events

  • Started a new member engagement system to individually connect new members with CPA leaders in their areas of interest

  • Continuing to work toward the development of regional member hubs
